Sandra Bullock said "I'm so not winning an Oscar,"
After winning top honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Golden Globes, Sandra Bullock received her first Oscar nomination this year for "The Blind Side."
"Nine times out of 10 I always pick who's going to win. And I already know who's going to win." Hmmm ... sounds like Sandra Bullock's using a little reverse psychology, doesn't it? [People]
Still, I'm sorta digging Bullock's self-deprecation. Over the years, a few of her fellow movie-makers have made similar pronouncements. Let's see how it turned out for them.
• OK, so we don't know who will win this one, either, but James Cameron doesn't think he'll win best director for "Avatar." Not because he doesn't deserve a win, but because Cameron thinks he peeved off the Oscar bosses when he said "I'm king of the world!" after winning best director for "Titanic." He explains, "I always believe it's very unlikely that lightning will strike twice. I believe it's very unlikely that we will win because I made such a jacka** out of myself last time." Instead, Cameron is cheering for his ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow, to win for "The Hurt Locker." "I would happily lose to her," he said. "I've already got one of those damn statues." [Seattle PI]
• In 2006, Charlize Theron was nominated for best actress for her role in "North Country," but was putting bets on her running mates. "I love Reese (Witherspoon) and it's definitely her year," she said. "It feels like Felicity Huffman's year too. I think it's between those two." Theron was right though -- Reese took home the Oscar for "Walk the Line." [Showbiz]
• Michael Caine doesn't think he will win any more Oscars unless there's a particularly bad year for movies. "I've been nominated nine times but I've lost seven," he said. "All I'm waiting for is a c**p year so I can get in." If Michael Caine wants a low bar year, I think we should give it to him ... not that he should have too much competition with the whippersnappers making movies these days.
• Dame Judi Dench was up for an Oscar in 2007 for "Notes On A Scandal." But after one win and four nominations, she wasn't crossing her fingers. She said, "Don't put any money on me because you'll lose." Dench ended up having to miss the event for surgery. "It's strange because in the theater you would say 'Break a leg,' " she said. "I'm going to have my leg broken and put back together. I will watch and cheer from my bed." Dame Helen Mirren won the Oscar for her role in "The Queen," and it seemed classier with two dames competing for the little gold man. [Reuters]
